    Why this Margarita

You can enjoy a refreshing low carb cocktail without compromising on flavor! Making it yourself gives you full control over the ingredients!

Made with fresh lime juice, powdered sweetener, and orange sparkling water, this recipe is healthier than the average margarita. Whether you are going keto, sugar free, or just looking to make healthy choices, this margarita makes for a guilt-free celebration.

    Ingredients Needed

Ingredients: salt for glass, powdered sweetener, tequila, lime for juice, and orange sparkling water.
Reminder to scroll to the recipe card for detailed quantities.

How to Make a Sugar Free Margarita

One of the things that makes a margarita so distinctive is that is incorporates 3 types of flavor: sweet, sour, and salt. The sweet, of course, is our challenge. So I pay special attention to getting my sugar substitute to dissolve.

I use a powdered sweetener (erythritol) and first stir it in the cocktail shaker with the tequila and fresh lime juice BEFORE adding ice.

Stirring sweetener into the liquids to dissolve.

Then, add some ice, cover and shake it up.

Pour this mixture into a prepared margarita glass. I do coat the rim with salt and put ice in the glass to make this margarita "on the rocks".

Now, this cocktail is missing a key element of a traditional margarita: orange liqueur. Since orange liqueur is full of sugar, I use orange flavored sparkling water (Sparkling Ice) to add that orange flavor without any additional sugar.

I prefer to add the sparkling water as a "topper" rather than measuring it into the cocktail shaker since an exact proportion is not really necessary.

Garnish with a twist of lime and enjoy!

    Serving Suggestions

So many ways to enjoy this lovely cocktail! You can make some easy queso dip and serve it with some low carb chips. Or have it with a low carb chicken fajita casserole for a satisfying and healthy meal.

    Substitutions and Variations

Feel free to use another sweetener, but pay attention to how well it dissolves in the liquid. Most sugar substitutes take a little more time than good old table sugar LOL.

Also, many sweeteners do not translate 1:1 to sub for sugar, so you might need to adjust the amount you use.

To make this a mocktail, just omit the tequila and increase the amount of orange sparkling water. Yummy!
