Why You Will Love This Smoothie

This is more than just a smoothie: it's a way to supercharge your day! The spirulina delivers protein and antioxidants, chia seeds add fiber and omega-3 fatty acids (the kind we want!) and the spinach sneaks in iron and vitamins. Popeye had it right!

Using stevia-sweetened protein powder keeps the flavor sweet without added sugar, and ensures the smoothie will satisfy.

    Ingredients Needed

Ingredients: spinach, chia seeds, almond milk, low carb protein powder, and spirulina.
Reminder to scroll to the recipe card for detailed quantities.

    A Few Ingredient Notes

I found a low carb protein powder that I love. It's vanilla flavored and stevia sweetened. It comes in a giant jug which is a little intimidating at first but once I had it I was so glad, and I use it now all the time! Here is an affiliate link to find it on Amazon: vanilla protein powder. They do have other flavors, which I haven't tried yet. Let me know if you do!

Similarly, I found the spirulina powder on Amazon as well. The spirulina is a blue-green algae and a little scoop of this goes a long way, so I tried to find a smaller container. Here is an affiliate link for spirulina powder, in case you are trying to find a source for it.

How to Make a Spinach Smoothie with Spirulina

I always start with getting the powders distributed in the almond milk. First pour the almond milk into the blender jar.

Add the protein powder, chia seeds, and spirulina powder.

Adding dry powders to the blender.

Pulse this mixture a few times to help distribute. This helps prevent clumps of chia seeds or spirulina forming in your smoothie. (If you have a super high powered blender this might not be necessary)

Add the spinach to the blender jar. I usually have to smoosh this down with a spoon or my hand.

Pulse the blender a few times to break up the spinach.

You might need to give the contents a little stir to help it along.

Pushing the spinach into the partially blended mixture.

Then, blend at high speed for about a minute, until the smoothie is completely mixed.

I like to pour this into small jars and put in the fridge so I can grab one whenever I need a quick snack.

    Serving Suggestions

I love to have my green smoothie in a bowl with some fruit and granola. Fresh berries are divine! And a little banana adds just the right amount of extra sweetness.

If you want to drink it as a smoothie, you might want to add banana or other fruit to the blender to give it more sweetness. When I drink smoothies my portions are a little bigger, so this recipe might make 2 servings, but feel free to adjust as you need.

    Substitutions and Variations

Smoothies are 100% something you should customize and make your own! Use this recipe as a starting point and add or subtract as you like.

As I mentioned above, adding a banana will sweeten the smoothie mixture. If you want to drink it right away you might want to blend some ice in the mixture to cool it down. Or, use frozen banana slices or frozen berries to add fruit flavor and make it cold at the same time!

    Storage

Typically smoothies are best when fresh, especially when you add fruit. That's why my base recipe does not include fruit, because I like to keep smaller portions longer. I do split the spinach and spirulina smoothie into 4 small portions and try to consume them within 4 days. I like to pull the cold portion out of the fridge, pour into a bowl and add fruit and a little granola to make it more of a meal. 😋

    Ingredients

    • 2 cups almond milk
    • ¼ cup vanilla protein powder low carb
    • ¼ cup chia seeds
    • 1 teaspoon spirulina powder
    • 2 cups baby spinach

    Instructions

    • Pour almond milk into the blender jar. Add protein powder, chia seeds and spirulina.
2 cups almond milk, ¼ cup vanilla protein powder, ¼ cup chia seeds, 1 teaspoon spirulina powder
    • Pulse the blender a few times to moisten and distribute the dry ingredients into the liquid.
    • Add the spinach to the blender and pulse a few times to begin breaking it up.
      2 cups baby spinach
    • You might need to stop the blender and stir a little to re-distribute the spinach.
    • Blend at high speed for about a minute, or until the mixture is smooth and uniform.

    Notes

Nutrition estimates are assuming 2 servings per recipe, and are based upon using a standard protein powder. If you use a stevia-sweetened powder, the carbs will be reduced. Surprisingly, most of the carbs in this recipe come from the chia seeds, however they also have the most fiber so if you calculate net carbs they pretty much offset each other.
